Sha’ashua Performance Labs

What are the roots of this work?

Sha’ashua labs offer engagement with the self-expressive performance medium. As such, we do not aim to create and embody fictive characters drawn from existing artistic works - but rather we access our own archetypal sources and give expression to the images and voices we carry deep within ourselves.

Sha’ashua labs operate in the paratheatrical tradition of Jerzy Grotowski and Antero Alli and yet they do not attempt to emulate either practitioner.

Rather, we explore a range of techniques drawn from the Grotowski tradition and we combine them with elements of authentic movement, dance and physical theatre, as well as with a range of meditative and introspective techniques drawn from Buddhism, Yoga, and Transpersonal & Integral Psychology, the latter two of which are human potential movements grounded in academic psychology.

In Sha’ashua labs we also draw inspiration from a range of complementary theatre and dance practices, touching upon practitioners such as Eugenio Barba, Anna Halprin, Gabrielle Roth, Phillip Zarrilli and Peter Brook.

To play, to explore and to reflect upon the invisible art of the performer is our main purpose. Our work takes us to the threshold between performance and ritual and it leads us to discover the psychological and spiritual roots of our craft … and of our own being.
